John 15:3 – “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
Romans 8:1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”
Isaiah 1:18 – “…though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool.”
Mark 7:2,3 – “And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.”
Quit trying to become clean enough to be saved, and used by God. God has made you clean or will make you clean if you put your faith and trust in His Son Jesus Christ. You will never be more forgiven then you are when you trust Jesus Christ as Savior. He makes you clean – literally and/or figuratively clean and pure.
This doesn’t mean that He misses a few spots or forgets to wash part of you. No, in Gods eyes you are completely spotless. It’s an insult to the person that washes you if you go around acting like you still stink. It’s really like saying, “Can you believe this, Jesus washed me but He did a horrible job. I still smell like a toilet!”
The Pharisees and Scribes were consumed with outward cleanliness. They followed hard after the traditions held by their ancestors and this, to them, made them clean.
Jesus said not so. He said there is nothing from the outside that can make us clean or unclean. In other words He was saying go to the source of the problem. It is always a heart issue.
Many of us are more hung up on what the current standard of outward holiness is than serving God from the new heart and Spirit He has given us. This is the real you. Quit with all the artificial service and begin truly serving the Lord.
Application: God has created a new heart within you, He has given you a new Spirit to serve Him with. You are clean now and your service is pleasing to Him. Don’t get hung-up and worn out by the commandments and traditions of men. Stay faithful to the Word of God, the thing that made you clean in the first place. Focus on knowing Him and live life in constant praise of His glory! (Ephesians 1:14)
Consider the words in Ezekiel 36:25-27 – “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
