I graduated high school in 1998. It was kind of unthinkable to go back to high school after graduation. I don’t know why but it just seemed “uncool” to go back. Though you still had friends and still had fond memories of teachers, and coaches you were to move on with your life – college, work, marriage, and family.
This is very similar to the work of the Gospel. Many times we think of this word Gospel as just meaning the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we believe in order to be saved and it’s work is finished. But really the Gospel is not only what saves us but is what we live by for the rest of our lives.
As I continue through Romans I have jumped over to Galatians and gotten more insight and help as I seek to understand the Christian life better. In Galatians Paul tells us that the Law is like a school teacher. Imagine it like this, you and a bunch of other students are sitting in a classroom and the teacher’s name is Law. Everyday he teaches you faithfully about your sinfulness and God’s holiness.
You can never graduate from this class until you realize and believe two things – 1. That you are a sinner (Romans 3:23) 2. That Christ died and rose from the dead for you and His sacrifice pleases/satisfied the Father.
On the day that you come to truly believe this you graduate from the school of Law. You are finished. Don’t keep hanging around. That is uncool. How would you look at a man, let’s say the captain of the football team when he was in school a decade ago, if he kept coming back to school hanging out in the hallways and trying to relive his school days? I would say you agree that this is not very cool. As a matter of fact he would probably get the police called on him for being a complete weirdo!!!
That is what Paul is saying in Galatians – Move on!!! Don’t go back and don’t listen to those preachers who preach a false Gospel. They tell you that you can be saved by faith but from there on you are put back under the Law – Performing for God! This is a false Gospel and Paul says let these men/women be accursed. This is not Gospel Christianity. This is fake, and fatal.
Romans 1:16,17 says “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
In other words, the Gospel is how we get righteous, stay righteous, and live righteous lives. It starts by faith, continues by faith, and ends by faith in Christ.
There is a ton more to say but I will end by pointing you to how you live now that you graduated from the Law. It is found in Galatians 2:20 – “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
It’s all by another law now – the Law of faith. It is Christ living in you. He doesn’t want to help you live this life – He wants to live it through you! Stop trying to fix the outside by measuring your righteousness by your performance, actions and standards. You are as righteous as you will ever be by your position in Christ. Focus on the one that gives you your righteousness. Get to know Him. Acknowledge Him and let your life’s posture be kneeling to Him as Lord. Then His power can and will rest upon you and you will, I mean He will, live the Christian life the way it was meant to be!!!
